The whole country is celebrating His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s eighty forth birthday today. This is one of the most important national holidays in Thailand and it also serves a Father’s day. And this year – now that the great flood which cost hundreds of life and affected nearly 5 million people is receding – people have even more reason to celebrate.

Public places and private houses are decorated with his picture, flags and lights. Affection and reverence for the king is demonstrated everywhere. Religious ceremonies where people pray for their king’s health and happiness take place all over the country.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX, is the longest serving monarch in of Thailand. Born on December 5, 1927, he ist the Ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty. He ascended to throne on 9 June, 1946 and is the constitutional head of the country.

If you are in BKK – the inner area of the Grand Palace will be open at night for the coming week.

In many places around Thailand people will gather to light candles at 7.19pm.

Volunteers and staff will attend the celebrations tonight in Nongkhai.
