Volunteer Work in Thailand
What kind of volunteer work is available in Thailand?
Short term volunteer work often is assistance for a Thai English teacher who has to manage 40 and more students per class. You will help with the lesson preparation and assist in class or take over some of the spoken language exercises. A lot of Thai English teachers are not fluent speakers. For them it is a great help to have someone who is fluent in English and can help the teacher to develop his / her own skills as well as the students ability to speak.
Computer teaching is normally something that requires a few weeks time. All schools have computers, age and condition vary though. If the school has a computer teacher, he often also is the one who has to maintain the computers. Not an easy task if you are already busy with teaching and never got proper training on how to do it. Volunteer work as computer teacher often requires to be able to set up or repair the computers before you can start working with them. The students ability to understand your English is limited and they need time to get used to your accent.
Is volunteer work in Thailand for me?
Everyone who has spare time and is fit enough to travel to Thailand can work as a volunteer in Thailand. We are receiving people from all countries and all ages. The only conditions are an open mind and tolerance on your side. See possibilities for volunteer work
Volunteer work is also a great opportunity for older people to keep in contact with younger generations. Volunteer work together with younger volunteers is a chance to let younger people profit from the elders experience while seniors get a chance to understand what drives the younger generation. And tasks can be shared according to abilities.
If you want to come with your family, no problem. Thailand is easy to travel and children are welcome everywhere. Your children can either accompany their parents while they do their volunteer work or have a program on their own if they are old enough.
Where is volunteer work available?
We organize volunteer work in north-eastern Thailand. This is one of the less developed parts of the country. The average tourist may see the Khmer ruins or rush through to go to Laos. Not many stop to take a closer look. But it is worth, because here you still find Thai culture that is already lost in other places. Take a break while backpacking Asia or spend your holidays in Thailand teaching a few hours or helping at an orphanage. Join their daily life for a while and find out how it feels to become part of the Thai society for a short time.
Why should I consider to do volunteer work?
There are many possible reasons. Maybe you travel alone but want to share experiences with others.
Or you want to see more of Thailand than the average backpacker or tourist.
Or you just got a brand new TEFL certificate and want to practice your new skills before trying them on a paid position.
Or you plan getting a TEFL certificate but want to test yourself first and get some practice. Or you spend a gap year abroad and want to try something new.
Or you just retired and do not feel old enough just to sit at home and watch TV. Maybe you want to do something useful and look for a place where your skills are still valued?
Become a volunteer, with or without qualifications, after secondary school or during your university time, while unemployed, after retirement or during a career break.
